Announcing the Preservation Buffalo Niagara Historic Plaque Program!
September 1, 2017
Western New York has a rich history and a distinctive architectural character – one that appeals to residents and visitors alike. Preservation Buffalo Niagara is proud to celebrate this heritage with our Historic Plaque Program. These custom-made plaques will have the date the building was built as well as information pertaining to the original owner and, if applicable, the historic district it is located within. Not only do these plaques share the history of a home or building, they also acknowledge the stewardship of an owner in preserving and maintaining its historic character.
Plaques are available for properties that are individually landmarked or are a contributing resource in a local, State, or National Register Historic District. Properties must also retain their historic character and are in a good state of preservation. This eligibility is based on the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for Rehabilitation. Property owners must complete an application form and submit it to PBN along with information about the building’s construction, specifically information confirming the built date and the original owner, and a photograph.
Plaque applications are processed four times a year with the deadlines being December 31st, March 31st, June 30th, and September 30th. Once submitted, applications are reviewed by Preservation Buffalo Niagara. If deemed eligible, the property’s history is confirmed and the plaque layout is drafted. Once plaque layout is agreed on by PBN and the property owner, the plaque is ordered and cast.
The cost of the plaque is $175 for PBN Members and $200 for non-members and includes an Individual membership to PBN. Please make checks payable to ‘Preservation Buffalo Niagara’. A check or credit card information must accompany a submitted application but payment will not be processed until the application has been approved.
