Preservation Leader Selected; Preservation Specialist Sought

The Board of Trustees of Preservation Buffalo Niagara, on June 22, unanimously voted to appoint Michael Miller as Preservation Buffalo Niagara's Executive Director.

In a related action, Preservation Buffalo Niagara launched a search for a new staff person, a Preservation Specialist, to provide field services and assistance to preservation organizations and owners of historic properties throughout a seven county western New York region.  With these hires, Preservation Buffalo Niagara will have the most substantial preservation staff ever assembled to advance historic preservation in the Buffalo region.

The Creation of Preservation Buffalo Niagara

At the end of 2007, nationally recognized consultant Elizabeth B. Waters was invited to Buffalo (through funding from several not-for-profits including the Landmark Society and the Preservation Coalition) to assess the state of preservation in Buffalo. She issued a critical report in February 2008 entitled Buffalo Historic Preservation Issues and Opportunities Assessment.

After the Landmark Society and the Preservation Coalition joined to form Preservation Buffalo Niagara in October 2008, many of the criticisms in the Waters Report were muted. Local, state, and national praise followed:

On February 18, 2009, Preservation Buffalo Niagara announced that it was awarded a three-year, $117,500 Partners in the Field matching grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to hire a full time Preservation Specialist to provide information about historic preservation techniques and programs throughout a 7-county western New York region.  FULL PRESS RELEASE
